World of Work Month
March has been a busy month of discovery at Devonshire Hill Nursery & Primary School. Children have explored a broad variety of career paths through hands-on experiences. By participating in workshops and trips, they met a variety of inspiring professionals and learned about different roles within industries such as the emergency services, travel, retail, sustainable fashion, construction, engineering, design and logistics. We even visited the London Careers Festival!
Police officers, first aiders and firefighters explained how the work of the emergency services keeps our community safe, children were taught what to do if someone is in danger, harmed, or unwell. In the retail sector, the butcher, baker, fishmonger and store assistants demonstrated the importance of supermarket roles in the journey of food from farm to store.
Year 4 had some brilliant questions for the project manager, fashion designer, and graphic designer from Percival Clothing. Following this, a visit to the V&A Museum allowed the children to apply their new knowledge from a fresh perspective. Meanwhile Year 3 were especially excited to welcome architects from MAKE, developers of the Tottenham Stadium masterplan. We learned how the design process can contribute towards creating such a significant landmark at the centre of a community. Children enjoyed fulfilling their own brief from moodboard to 3D architecture models.
This experience has been about more than just learning about different jobs, it’s about enriching each pupil’s understanding of the world and helping them to discover their passions. By opening these doors, we hope to inspire children to see the paths to their future goals and the opportunities that are available in the world of work.
