Intent
The aim of Religious Education at the Devonshire Hill Nursery and Primary school is to help children to acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of the principal religions represented in Great Britain. Through RE, pupils develop their knowledge of the major world faiths and learn to appreciate the way that religious beliefs shape our lives and our behaviour. Our children will develop the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious and moral issues and enhance their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
Our RE curriculum is enhanced further with trips to places of worship in our local area.
Implementation
Having taken into account the requirements and guidelines presented in the Agreed Syllabus, the following religions have been selected for study at The Devonshire Hill Nursery and Primary School:
- Christianity
- Islam
- Judaism
- Hinduism
- Buddhism
The Devonshire Hill Nursery and Primary School uses the Discovery RE Scheme which supports teachers to deliver engaging and challenging RE lesson confidently. Through this scheme our childrenโs learning is carefully planned for progression and depth.
Impact
Our Religious Education curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. Through R.E., the children are able to make links between their own lives and those of others in their community and the wider world. The children are also developing an understanding of other peopleโs cultures and ways of life.
The R.E. curriculum offers our children the means to understand how other people choose to live and to understand why they choose to live in that way.
Right to Withdraw
Parents/carers have the statutory right under Section 71 of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 to request their child/ren are wholly or partly excused from:
- RE lessons in accordance with the school’s basic curriculum
- Acts of Collective Worship in schools
While parents and carers are not required to provide a reason for withdrawal, we do ask that you discuss any concerns with the Deputy Headteacher before finalising your decision. This ensures we have the opportunity to support you and address any questions you may have.
