Y5 RHSE Sessions

Tuesday 17 June 2025

Year 5 Relationships, Health and Sex Education Sessions

Dear Parents/Carers,

As part of our Jigsaw PSHE programme, we will be focussing on the topic of ‘Changing Me’ this half term.

For Year 5 children, this will include sessions about self-image, puberty, conception and the year ahead.

The Jigsaw curriculum includes sex education to prepare our children for life in a rapidly changing world, ensuring that they understand and respect the diverse world in which they are growing up.

We are writing to you to let you know that we intend to deliver the Sex Education aspect of our PSHE Jigsaw programme to our Year 5 children on Tuesday 1st July.

  • At the end of this session, children will be able to understand that sexual intercourse can lead to conception and that this is how babies are usually made.
  • Understand that sometimes people need IVF to help them have a baby.

Sessions will be taught by your child’s class teacher.

At The Devonshire Hill Nursery and Primary School we define Sex Education as ‘Human Reproduction’

Work on puberty is now included in statutory Health Education and therefore is mandatory. Children cannot be withdrawn from these lessons.

Parents can request to withdraw their children from Sex Education during primary school.

If you would like to withdraw your child, as stated above, you will be required to meet with the Headteacher and put your request in writing.

Our Relationships, Sex and Health Education Policy is available to read on our school’s website, along with an overview of topics taught within our Jigsaw Programme.

Please contact me if you require any more information regarding this.

Yours Sincerely,
Rachel Bates | Assistant Headteacher and SENCo.
