Dear Parent/Carer,
Children in Year 4, 5 and 6 attended an assembly on Monday 10th July with PC Bell of the Safer Schools Police Team.
PC Bell spoke to the children about being safe online and gave a powerpoint presentation.
The children were advised that if they are worried about anything they should tell their parents immediately. PC Bell spoke about the legal age for accessing the various apps available and asked that parents/carers also educate themselves to be aware of which apps their child is too young to register for and that they are falsifying their ages (date of birth) to access these apps.
His top tip/advice to parents/carers is to make sure you know what your child is accessing and check their devices regularly.
PC Bell also stressed that children should not be easily identified online – as a precaution they should not:
- post pictures of themselves as their profile/status image
- use their real name
- be allowed to game in their bedroom with the door shut, especially not whilst using headphones/microphones as this is isolating.
PC Bell advised the children that online bullying is viewed as a crime of ‘bullying and/or harassment’, the punishment for which is up to 6 months in prison and/or a £5k fine.
Please take a few minutes to ask your child about the assembly. If you have any questions or queries please contact the school office.
Yours sincerely
Julie D’Abreu | Headteacher
