LIT Spelling Bee Competition – Year 3/4/5
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are excited to announce that our school will be taking part in the LIT Spelling Bee competition for children in Year 3, 4 and 5.
To begin the process, all children will take part in an in class spelling test over the coming weeks. This will give every pupil the opportunity to showcase their spelling skills in a supportive and familiar environment. Please follow the relevant link below to access the spelling list relevant to your child(ren).
We encourage pupils to practise their spellings over the Easter holidays to help build their confidence and prepare for the spelling test.
From these class spelling tests, the top 10 performers will be selected to take part in our school Spelling Bee. This in-school event will be a fun and engaging competition where pupils will spell words aloud in front of their peers.
Following the school competition, the top 3 pupils will be chosen to represent our school in an interschool Spelling Bee, where they will compete against children from other local schools. This will be a wonderful opportunity for children to build confidence, celebrate their achievements, and take pride in representing our school.
We encourage all pupils to approach this opportunity with enthusiasm and confidence. Most importantly, we hope they enjoy the experience and develop a love for words and language.
Please see below for top tips on how to prepare. Further details of dates will be shared soon.
Thank you for your continued support.
Yours sincerely,
Tina Georgiades – Deputy Headteacher
Spelling Bee Preparation Tips
1. Practise a little every day:
Short, regular practice (10–15 minutes) is more effective than long sessions.
Focus on a few words at a time.
2. Say it, sound it, spell it:
Encourage children to:
• Say the word aloud
• Break it into sounds (syllables)
• Spell it out loud or write it down
3. Look for patterns and rules:
Help pupils notice common spelling patterns such as:
• -tion, -sion, -ing, -ed
• Silent letters (e.g. kn, wr)
4. Use the word in a sentence:
Understanding the meaning helps with remembering the spelling.
5. Write it out:
Practise writing tricky words multiple times. You can also use:
• Rainbow writing (different colours)
• Chalk, whiteboards, or apps
6. Test each other:
Turn practice into a fun quiz at home with parents, siblings, or friends.
7. Learn tricky words by heart:
Some words don’t follow rules—these just need to be memorised (e.g. because, said, people).
8. Listen carefully:
In a spelling bee, pupils should:
• Listen to the whole word
• Ask for it to be repeated if needed
• Think before answering
9. Stay calm and confident:
It’s okay to make mistakes – encourage children to try their best and enjoy the experience.
